Is It Too Late To Learn A Technical Skill Like Software Engineering?

I’m fifty-two, so this question crossed my mind as I was researching and comparing various software engineering bootcamps. “Is there a specific coding language I should learn?” I know I can’t dedicate myself full-time because I still have to work. “What programs are highly rated?” I had all these thoughts and questions. I ultimately decided on TripleTen due to its flexible schedule and the comprehensive support they provide for completing the program and securing a job. 

A little background first. To say I have had many pursuits in life is an understatement. I’ve worked extensively as an outdoor guide, been a licensed contractor, worked for two decades as an ICU RN, and now work nearly full time helping my wife run a small restaurant. Although these pursuits haven’t necessarily been technology-centered, I feel like I can take skills from each one and apply them to my future in software engineering.

I’m ten months into my program at TripleTen, and I truly believe the skills I’m learning now can help transfer into creating software that people can use to fuel their own pursuits, no matter what they may be.

TripleTen’s program has been an intensive and rewarding experience from the very start. It’s designed to mimic real-world tech tasks. This helps me learn to manage my time effectively as I actually learn to code. Right from the beginning, I’ve been building real-world applications. My first project was creating a webpage for a local library with an in-house coffee shop. Later in the program, I worked on developing an image-sharing application where users can create and manage their accounts and interact with other users' posts. I’ve learned to script pages, create layouts, add design and animation, and use forms that users interact with to input information. I built buttons that send, save, and delete information, and created and interacted with databases, allowing my applications to send and receive information across the web.

One of the standout aspects of the TripleTen program is the unwavering support provided by success managers.

They have been with me throughout the program, answering any questions I have and checking in periodically to ensure I’m getting the support I need to complete assignments. Having a personal contact to reach out to has been invaluable in keeping me on track – they even give me an occasional friendly push to get moving.

TripleTen also emphasizes career preparation from the start. Career success managers give talks frequently to prepare students for their future job search. There is guidance on writing strong resumes that showcase achievements, and throughout the program, there are lessons that prepare students for job interviews in the tech industry. All of the career resources help me feel confident that I won’t go into a job search without knowing what I can expect from prospective employers.

Sitting here now, reflecting on my journey at TripleTen, I realize how much I have grown both technically and personally. The program's structure, which breaks down learning into manageable two- to three-week-long sprints, has allowed me to steadily build my skills. Each sprint builds on the previous one, introducing new tools and techniques that reinforce my growing knowledge and give me the confidence to tackle more complex problems.

Moreover, TripleTen’s project-based approach has provided me with practical experience.

Working on real-world applications has been both challenging and rewarding.

I’ve developed a deeper understanding of programming languages, algorithms, and data structures. I’ve learned to collaborate effectively, a skill that’s crucial in software development. So many times, I’ve found myself completely stuck. I’m told this is the norm in software development, so I am trying to get used to it. Individual research and problem solving is greatly encouraged. But I can also reach out to other students at any time. There are co-working sessions where students connect in virtual groups and work through problems together. There are also several tutors that will respond to online questions and even do live tutor hours to answer more detailed queries.

In addition to the technical skills, TripleTen has emphasized the importance of continuous learning. The tech industry is constantly evolving, and staying current with the latest advancements is essential. The bootcamp has instilled in me a commitment to ongoing education, ensuring that I continue to grow and adapt as a software engineer. Each section of the program introduces resources that you can use forever to research and seek guidance.

Choosing TripleTen has been a pivotal decision in my journey toward becoming a software engineer.

The flexible schedule has allowed me to balance my studies with my responsibilities as a dad, a husband, and a small business partner. The guidance and support from success managers has kept me motivated and on track. The emphasis on career preparation has given me the tools and confidence to pursue my opportunities ahead in the tech industry with confidence.

I’m committed to leveraging the skills and knowledge I have gained through TripleTen to develop applications that meet users' needs and inspire them to lead healthier, more active lives. I want to take my experience in healthcare, my love for fitness and outdoor exploration, and even a new interest in food and nutrition and help to build applications that people can use in their everyday lives to make important decisions. I know technology has and will continue to improve our lives. I want to be a part of that future, and I believe my age and experience are nothing but an asset. TripleTen is giving me the foundation to pursue that vision. So, in answer to the question I posed at the beginning: No, it’s not too late. It’s the perfect time.
